The History of Piercing
Body piercing is ancient and can be traced back to several cultures. The ancient Romans pierced nipples as a sign of bravery. Native peoples the world over have engaged in lip piercing, earlobe stretching, and genital piercing. The apadravya, a piercing of the glans of the penis,is mentioned in the Kama Sutra (700AD) and the palang piercing has been practised in SE Asia for several hundred years.
Today body piercing is widespread and popular, having received worldwide exposure from fashion models and rock stars. Prior to this, most body piercing was limited to small groups, notably those in the punk, S&M and some gay communities.
